RFNSW Areas of activity

The growing awareness of rural health needs has been reflected in the increased dedicated funding for rural programs.

The Richmond Fellowship of NSW has long been aware of the unmet needs of people with a mental illness in rural areas but like other organisations, we initially found the tyranny of distance proved to be a stumbling block.

The HASI rural program has now provided the opportunity to establish and maintain high support mental health accommodation services in rural areas, in the Greater Murray and Far West regions of NSW.

Interest and participation in establishing services in rural areas has been positive and well received, not only by mental health services, but also by local communities.

There was an acknowledgement by RFNSW for an approach that recognised that each region has its own unique characteristics yet has similarities to metropolitan areas.

The rural services program was created using local community knowledge, enthusiasm and the involvement of existing support services.

As with any rural program there are issues of isolation and service access difficulties. For some, families often provide the total care, as community supports are limited.

An Advisory Committee with members from mental health services, the housing provider, RFNSW, carer and consumer representatives meet monthly to steer the program and to resolve issues at a local level.

A Selection Committee, consisting of representatives from RFNSW and mental health services meet to discuss referrals and determine appropriateness of the program based on the eligibility criteria. Both structures have enhanced the partnerships through communication and networking.

RFNSW's Rural Area office provides services to individuals in Bathurst, Bourke, Broken Hill, Cowra, Dubbo, Orange and Parkes.

The RFNSW Rural Area office is located in Dubbo.
